I have owned a number of the Elasto gel packs and will continue to replace them as needed.
To be fair, they last a really long time unless you fall asleep at the microwave and forget to remove them. I have migraines and get great relief from the heat that these provide. In my attempts to find something that will relieve the pain I have tried all types of materials. Some will not hold heat very long, some are uncomfortable on your skin, others don't get hot enough and some types give off a weird film. None of those problems have occurred with Elasto Gel.
They do have their limits. All microwaves heat differently and many have hot spots inside them. I would definitely recommend that you start with minimal time and work up in 30 second increments. Also, microwaves continue to cook even after the machine is off so be aware that you can overheat the pack even after the microwave has shut off.
As far as cold goes, I never use them for this purpose, I am not sure that they get as cold as I like for that type of injury. That said, I have found nothing better for heat so I love them.
These are well worth the cost even if they seem expensive. They last many times longer than other products and don't get moldy inside like rice bags and other "low-tech" materials.

My husband is recovering from rotator cuff surgery, his Physical Therapist uses this exact ice pack, that's why we ordered it. It conforms nicely and holds the cold well.

This product is great for icing the lower back. It stays cold for 15-20 minutes, it deeply chills the muscles without freezing your skin, and the gel is very comfortable. I keep mine in the freezer, and it's ready to go anytime my back needs it.

I had already purchaced so many of them about 10 or so, my mom found really useful all her friends asking me to order more. I say it's awesome item to have. It helped me alot.

I bought this Elasto gel pack because I have a bad back. I keep it in the freezer, so I can use it on my back at any time. It is very comfortable compared to an ice pack. It is comfortable to sit against it while watching T.V. or laying on top of it in bed because the gel stays soft. I highly recomend this.
